Police Hunt Sniper in Washington Region

ROCKVILLE, Maryland (voa) – U.S. law enforcement authorities hunting a sniper blamed for 11 attacks in the Washington area have released their first wanted poster, images of a white box truck.

The composite pictures are based on eyewitness reports about a vehicle seen driving away from the scene of some of the shootings. They are the first images associated with the elusive killer, who has been stalking Washington suburbs in the states of Maryland and Virginia since October second, and targeting victims apparently at random.

The gunman has shot 10 people in the Washington metropolitan area, killing eight and critically wounding two, including a school-boy who remains hospitalized.

Local and federal authorities remain tight-lipped about details of the investigation and have released little information to the public.

On Saturday police announced that a reward leading to the arrest and conviction of the sniper now stands at $500,000. Police say donations from corporations and private citizens pushed the reward fund to the $500,000 mark.

The governor of Virginia, Mark Warner, is urging citizens to help catch the killer, saying the eyes and ears of the public are some of the best assets in the investigation right now.

The latest victim was killed on Friday at a gasoline station 50 kilometers south of Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Roadblocks and vehicle-by-vehicle searchs only a few hundred meters from the shooting failed to nab the killer.
