NEW YORK – September 13,2001 – U.S. officials say police have detained four men carrying false identity documents and pretending to be airline pilots at New York City’s Kennedy Airport.
Meanwhile, the ABC television network says police also detained five other men at LaGuardia airport, also in New York City. ABC says they had fake pilots licences and identification.
Events at the two airports prompted authorities late Thursday to stop all inbound flights to city airports. The closure came just hours after the government lifted its complete ban on all U.S. air traffic.
FAA officials say only international flights by U.S. based carriers will be allowed into American airspace for the time being. FAA spokesman Les Dorr tells VOA that international carriers are still barred from flying their planes into the United States.
Also Thursday, Vice President Dick Cheney was moved to the Camp David presidential retreat, outside Washington, as a precautionary security measure.
