OnePlus wants you to buy its next phone using virtual reality

Last year, OnePlus became the first company to host a VR launch event as it unveiled the OnePlus 2. This year, it is repeating the concept but with a significant expansion.
In a post on the firm’s forums, OnePlus explained how it has taken inspiration from a fan video to imagine where OnePlus will be in decades to come. The company will be broadcasting its launch event in virtual reality from its space station at “The Loop,” its new headquarters in the future.
To enable as many people as possible to participate in the experience, OnePlus has again manufactured VR headsets to give away for free. This year’s models are a substantial improvement over the cardboard versions for the OnePlus 2, featuring a fully enclosed design.
The OnePlus Loop VR headset was developed in partnership with AntVR to create a complete virtual reality experience. OnePlus says it should offer a more immersive view of the action, involving you in the launch of the OnePlus 3.
Like last year, the company won’t be charging anything for the headsets. A limited stock of 30,000 is available. To obtain one, you have to visit OnePlus’ website and pay for postage. The headsets are available in regions worldwide and will begin shipping from June 6th.
“We’re extremely excited about the OnePlus 3, but it’s important to remember that without you, we wouldn’t have made it this far,” said OnePlus. “Actually, that’s why we decided to do VR launches in the first place. Instead of speaking to a few members of the press, to be able to bring all of you together at the same time, and same place. This is just as much your launch as it is ours. We can’t wait to see what’s next, so let’s find out – together.”
OnePlus also wants to use the event to demonstrate to the tech industry that we’ve only “scratched the surface” of what’s possible with VR. The company wants to see it used in more unique scenarios, such as truly immersive product launch events.
After OnePlus launched the OnePlus 2 last year, Samsung followed the company’s lead to unveil the Galaxy S7 in January with a virtual reality event. OnePlus credited the firm with an “honourable mention” for being the second company worldwide to launch a product in VR.
When it arrives, the OnePlus 3 is expected to feature an all-metal chassis and Full HD 5-inch AMOLED display. The phone will reportedly be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820, up to 6GB of RAM and potentially as much as 128GB of storage.
Additional specifications include a 16-megapixel primary camera, 8-megapixel front camera and the usual round of sensors including NFC. As with previous OnePlus flagships, the handset will be a very aggressively priced premium device aimed at the top of the market.
