In 1999 SkyNet Internet Collective, a not-for-profit organization, has chosen Canadian Minister of Industry, John Manley, P.C., M.P., federal government of Canada, as the recipient of The Internet ’99 Person of the Year Award. The Internet Person of the Year Award honours great achievers for their role in improving our daily lives on the Information Superhighway and emphasizes a new era of doing business by restructuring the way business communicates and the way business markets and sells products.
Skynet Internet Collective was founded in 1996 by a world-wide network of corporate professionals and Internet enthusiasts with a mission to facilitate access to the Internet for the disabled and blind.
The Internet ’99 Person of the Year Award was presented to The Canadian Minister of Industry on March 9th, 2000, at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada by the Mayor of Mississauga, Her Worship Hazel McCallion and the Hon. Dr. Stanley Haidasz, P.C., Chairman of Skynet Internet Collective.
The Honourable Minister John Manley, was the first Awardee from government and ministerial spheres, has been recognized for his achievements in the area of Information Policy and Nation-Wide connection on the Internet which had a significant impact on Canadians, and Canadian-based businesses nationally and in the global market.
Skynet Internet Collective plays the following three roles:
First, It has a mission to make the Internet accessible to the blind and disabled persons.
Second, it has a most important role, indeed its ultimate goal is to establish in cooperation with Industry, Universities, and various levels of Government a state-of-the-art cybernetic facility for information, instruction, and research assisting blind and disabled persons to access the Information Highway.
Third, it has an immediate role, granting unique annual Internet Person of the Year Awards of recognition for Cybernetic achievements – the first and only such award of this kind in the World.
