New Phones Promise Faster Web Access

HANOVER, Germany – Cell phone industry leader Nokia and electronics giant Siemens are taking the wraps off new mobile phones that send data up to four times as fast as current models. The phones promise quicker wireless access to the Internet as users wait for new generation phones to arrive.

USING TECHNOLOGY CALLED GPRS or General Packet Radio Service, the new phones transmit signals at two to four times the current speed.

In the United States, Motorola was the only firm offering phones using the GPRS technology. But many other phone makers are now rushing to roll out the new GPRS handsets.

Nokia of Finland and Siemens introduced their own phone ahead of Thursday’s opening of Germany’s huge computer and technology fair. Nokia launched two models, while Siemens unveiled one. All should be in shops during the second half of this year.
