Nest smart home devices went offline, behaved badly

On Wednesday night, Nest users experienced difficulties with the system as they were unable to connect with their devices via the Nest phone or web app.

This glitch in the system also included Nest Secure and Nest x Yale Locks acting badly, as well as thermostats, locks, cameras, doorbells, smoke detectors and alarms having to be used manually. Like the old days.

Some of these comments may have been poking fun at the horror of having to use manual controls, while others had more serious concerns.

In an aside, from the @nestsupport Twitter account users also found out that their Nest Cams would not be able to record during a power outage, but maybe there’s a chance a solid state recorder is coming (soon?).

The issue — which currently sits as unexplained — was marked as resolved by Nest on Thursday morning at 2:28 a.m. via Twitter, but it’s probably been a good lesson for users who rely heavily on internet-connected devices. Not to say we shouldn’t, just to say we should always be prepared for when something like this happens.
