More Pipe Bombs Found In US Midwest

WASHINGTON (voa) – Five pipe bombs were found in mailboxes in the midwestern U.S. state of Nebraska on Saturday, sparking more fears a day after six people were injured by pipe bombs exploding in rural mailboxes in Illinois and Iowa.

The bombs discovered Saturday were in the south-central part of Nebraska. None of them exploded, but at least one note was found that appeared similar to those found with Friday’s bombs.

Federal authorities say they have some leads into who may have planted the pipe bombs Friday, but they do not yet know how many people are responsible. FBI agents are terming the bombings acts of domestic terrorism. The bombs were accompanied by anti-government statements and a note saying more “attention-getters” are on the way.

Four postal workers and two residents were injured by the pipe bombs Friday, but none of the injuries was life-threatening.

Rural mail delivery was suspended Saturday in the area where Friday’s bombs were found. Postal officials in Washington have warned postal workers across the country to be cautious, saying this may not be a local problem.
