Microsoft patents folding phone that transforms into a tablet

In the past year, Microsoft has scaled-back its mobile division so much there’s very little left. The company is continuing to develop Windows 10 Mobile though, despite it currently appearing content not to launch any new hardware.
That’s not to say Microsoft isn’t developing concept devices though. As MSPoweruser discovered, the company has been exploring a folding handset that could operate as a large smartphone or a small tablet. It could fold over on a hinge or be used in a tent form factor like a current convertible.

As with any patent filing, there’s no indication Microsoft is actively working on developing the technology. However, there are points of interest here that suggest it could provide a glimpse into future Microsoft work. The Verge notes its creator is key – the filing names Kabir Siddiqui as the inventor, the same person who patented the kickstand and camera angle of Microsoft’s Surface tablets.
Microsoft last launched an all-new Surface product in 2015, unveiling the laptop-based Surface Book. Rumours of a ‘Surface Phone’ have now persisted for years but so far nothing has appeared. Microsoft is thought to be reluctant to launch a traditional smartphone device, instead aiming to create a new category as its Surface brand has formerly done.

The company has previously indicated it will only launch Surface Phone on its own terms. Satya Nadella said Microsoft is working on “the most ultimate mobile device” in an interview last year, noting the company will no longer approach phones “as defined by today’s market leaders.”
Since new Surface devices have typically involved the introduction of a new form factor, Microsoft may well be trying to engineer a new smartphone experience targeting consumers and professionals. From Nadella’s lexis, the company seems certain to be aiming for true distinguishing features before launching any new mobile hardware. The designs shown off in the patent filing are certainly unique, blending the smartphone and tablet form factors together into a multi-modal product that’s more versatile than current devices.

Interest in folding devices may increase this year as more companies explore the technology. Samsung is thought to be planning to launch its folding display tech later in 2017, unveiling a small tablet that can be folded in half and put into a pocket. LG will follow with its own product once Samsung’s has hit the market. Microsoft could then follow with a new kind of Surface, aiming to convince consumers that folding devices are credible companions.
