To develop the smart home, Kirio has partnered with Partners with buildSOUND, a builder of new homes in the Seattle area. The new smart home is located in Seattle’s Eastlake neighborhood.
The definition of a ‘smart home’ is a somewhat nebulous, although it is generally taken to encompass homes equipped with lighting, heating, and electronic devices that can be controlled remotely by smartphone or computer. This conventional definition may seem as little dated in the Kirio context.
The new smart house is built with the Kirio Smart Home System. For this buildSOUND integrated Kirio with a variety of devices and technologies together with data and machine learning.
The standard smart home model involves the home owner cobbling together devices that do not work all that well together, often via a series of apps. Moreover, not every aspect of the home can be controlled, such as the ability to shut off water or to control solar panels.
The Kirio approach allows for this, given that every core system has been integrated during the construction of the home. The home owner can control, via one platform: lighting, heating and air conditioning, security systems, video cameras, blinds, garage doors, water shutoff systems, sprinklers, TVs, music systems and more.
The single app can be operated from either iOS or Android systems, with some 8,000 different devices supported (whether they are wired or wireless). The Seattle show piece home has 60 connected devices. Included among these is a new earthquake detection and water leak detection system. Here the owner can be notified of a problem remotely and in real-time.
Also included is a machine learning element. This is called AutoLearn; this technology enables the home to learn the habits and activities of the homeowner and make recommendations to maximize comfort, convenience and savings.

In related news, the Smart City Expo World Congress, the world’s largest smart city event, takes place at the end of November 2017. This year’s congress is focuses on the future of smart and sustainable cities. The event is targeted at city and public-sector leaders; industry and investors, and standards makers.
