LG will ‘set new standards’ for smartphones with the upcoming V20

In a Korean-language statement, LG said today it is planning to introduce the V20 in September. It will launch ahead of Google’s 2016 Nexus handsets, usually the first phones to come with a new Android release out of the box. The LG V20 will be the first phone with Android 7.0 preinstalled, giving users access to the new features the OS update includes like multi-window multitasking, enhanced security and a longer battery life.
The announcement has provided a better estimate for when Android 7.0 will launch. Recent leaks have suggested it will arrive sometime this month, a timeframe that now seems more accurate. Existing Nexus phones will get the update in a matter of weeks. LG will then get its time in the spotlight, unveiling the first true Nougat phone.
The company has begun a heavy advertising campaign for the V20, claiming it will “set new standards in the premium phone space.” It’s difficult to judge the accuracy of the statement as hardware details haven’t been revealed. The phone hasn’t been revealed by tipsters yet either, leaving it rather undocumented for a flagship device.
LG has provided a few http://www.androidpolice.com/2016/07/31/lg-says-v20-will-released-september-android-7-0/ t=_blank]basic details, revealing the V10’s unique ticker display will return on the new handset. The dual front selfie camera will also make a reappearance, alongside a 32-bit audio DAC for sound enthusiasts. Other than these small insights, nothing is known about the phone, although LG promises “expanded multimedia capabilities.” It did not accompany its announcement with an image of the device.
LG’s last flagship smartphone launch was back in February for the G5, the company’s rival to the likes of the iPhone 6s and Samsung Galaxy S7. The unique handset sports a modular design, allowing users to switch between accessories including a camera surround, Hi-Fi system and extra battery. It has failed to resonate with consumers though and LG is now struggling to shift phones.
Last year’s V10 proved to be an unexpected hit, gaining positive reviews and praise for its unique ticker display. A small 2.1-inch screen sits above the main 5.7-inch panel and operates completely independently, keeping information such as news, status updates and system information constantly accessible. Its metal design looks clean and smart, unlike the more bulbous chassis of the G5.
LG will be hoping it can replicate its success with the V10 with the V20. It will be able to gain some traction immediately owing to its use of Android 7.0 before any other manufacturer. However, other brands will quickly catch up and release their own Nougat devices. Apple’s launch of the iPhone 7 in the same month as the V20 could lead to it quickly getting forgotten, as with the G5.
