SALT LAKE CITY (voa) – The head of South Korea’s Olympic Committee says the delegations from North and South Korea have agreed to march together at the opening ceremony of the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Kim Un Yong told reporters in Seoul Monday that both Korean Olympic committees had agreed to the plan with International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge.
The two nations marched together for the first time at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, but competed separately. The two states have been divided since the Korean War ended in 1953. Kim said he expects North Korea to send just a small delegation to the Games.
So far, no North Korean athletes have qualified to compete, but there are still two weeks left in the qualification process. If no North Korean athletes win a direct berth they can still apply for a wildcard entry.
The Winter Olympics begin on February 8.
