Steve McQueen’s last-ever personalised Porsche is going to be put up for auction later this summer.
The iconic Hollywood actor, synonymous with fast cars and a love for speed and mechanics, was a keen collector of spectacular automobiles, and also raced competitively.
He finished 3rd in the 1961 British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch, and in 1970 won the 12 Hours of Sebring race, driving with Peter Revson in the 3-litre class.
Once the highest paid movie star in the world, McQueen owned an impressive array of supercars which included a Porsche 917, Porsche 908, Porsche 356 Speedster, Ferrari 512 , Ferrari 250 Lusso Berlinetta, Jaguar D-Type XKSS, 1962 Cobra and Ford GT40.
A number of McQueen’s Porsche supercars were custom made especially for him, and the one up for sale was built with a number of unique features, such as racing seats, a personalized MCQN930 license plate and dashboard switch which turned off the car’s rear lights, making it easier to escape a chasing vehicle.
The car is powered by a non–intercooled 3-litre engine with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection, and can produce 234 horsepower.
The current owner, Mike Regalia, previously owned and restored Steve McQueen’s Ferrari 250 Lusso which sold at a Christies auction for $2,310,000.
The Porsche 930 Turbo will be sold at the Mecum Daytime Auction in Monitor between August 13-15, with some of the proceeds being donated toBoys Republic, McQueen’s alma mater, a reform school in Chino, California where he was sent after an abusive stepfather persuaded his mother to sign an incorrigibility court order.
The car has already passed through some esteemed Hollywood owners, such as film director and producer Floyd Mutrux and actor Dean Paul Martin.
