JERUSALEM — Six Israeli policemen were charged with aggravated assault Monday for beating a Palestinian man wrongly suspected in the mob killing of two Israeli soldiers.
The Oct. 12 killings of the two reserve soldiers by a Palestinian mob in the town of Ramallah outraged Israel, which promised to hunt down the killers.
Security forces put together a list of suspects after viewing TV footage of the killings at the Ramallah police station, where the two reservists sought refuge after inadvertently entering the town on the way to their base.
A mob overpowered police, beat the two to death and threw one of their bodies out a second-story window. A photograph showed a Palestinian in the window, holding his blood-covered hands aloft in triumph.
Israeli police detained one suspect, identified by Israeli media as Thabet Asi, 23, of Beit Liqia, then stripped him naked and “struck him on all parts of his body,” according to the indictment released by prosecutors.
Later, police determined he was not involved in the killings and released him.
Police have arrested two other Palestinians in connection with the mob killing.
