International Wave of Terrorism-Related Arrests

LONDON – Police in several countries are reporting arrests in connection with last week’s attacks on New York and Washington and with alleged threats of terrorism elsewhere.

British Police say they arrested three men and one woman late Friday in connection with last week’s attacks in the United States. The four were taken into custody in London and Birmingham. Meanwhile, authorities in Paris arrested seven Islamic militants thought to be involved in a plot to attack U.S. facilities in Paris, including the American embassy.

Yemen arrested more than 20 people on suspicion of having links to alleged terrorist Osama Bin Laden and other Islamic extremist groups. Some of those being detained are so-called Afghan Arabs, Arabs who went to Afghanistan to fight against the Soviet invasion in the 1980s.

U.S. authorities, meanwhile, reported that charges have been filed against a man allegedly linked to Mr. bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda organization. Police had taken Nabil Al-Marabh into custody near Chicago before charging him on Wednesday. The FBI says it is looking for more than 230 people for questioning.

A Yemeni man was arrested at Toronto’s Pearson Airport on the day of the attacks and is charged with two passport-fraud violations after his baggage, which had gone on to Chicago without him, was found to contain four different passports. Three of the passports bore his picture but had different passport numbers, dates of birth and dates of issue.

And in Germany, prosecutors issued international arrest warrants for two students of Arab origin who are suspected of helping prepare last week’s terrorist attacks.
