Intel unveils Neural Compute Engine for AI applications

In a bid to advance its artificial intelligence capabilities, Intel today announced a new processing unit that can be used to deliver autonomous capabilities in drones, robotics, smart cameras and virtual reality experiences.

The Movidius Myriad X vision processing unit is designed to give machines the ability to see, understand and react to their environments in real-time.

“We’re on the cusp of computer vision and deep learning becoming standard requirements for the billions of devices surrounding us every day,” said Remi El-Ouazzane, VP and GM of Movidius. “Enabling devices with humanlike visual intelligence represents the next leap forward in computing. With Myriad X, we are redefining what a VPU means when it comes to delivering as much AI and vision compute power possible, all within the unique energy and thermal constraints of modern untethered devices.”

Intel is billing Myriad X as being the world’s first system-on-chip that includes a dedicated Neural Compute Engine specifically designed to run deep neural networks at high speed and low power without compromising accuracy.

Other features include the ability to run multiple simultaneous neural networks for enhanced understanding. This will enable devices to react more autonomously to their surroundings.

“With Myriad X, we are redefining what a VPU means when it comes to delivering as much AI and vision compute power possible, all within the unique energy and thermal constraints of modern untethered devices,” said El-Ouazzane.
