Huawei unveils the 6.6-inch Honor Note 8, a giant Android phablet

The phone was unveiled today in China. It is powered by an octa-core Kirin 955 processor comprised of four 2.5GHz A72 cores and four 1.8GHz A53 cores. A Mali T880 MP4 graphics processor provides ample power to run demanding games on the phone.
The most noticeable feature of the phone is its gigantic 6.6-inch display. It has a 2560×1440 2K resolution, allowing for an overall pixel density of 443 pixels per inch. The screen is larger than the phone’s principle rival, the Xiaomi Mi Max.
Huawei has stuck with a contemporary design for the phone that looks clean and minimalist if a little familiar. The aluminium body and rounded corners look similar to Apple’s iPhone 6s. Such designs are popular in Huawei’s native Chinese market though, allowing the phablet to meet with immediate success when it launches.
A selection of different colours are available, light gold, ice silver and a couple of shades of grey. The aluminium back is said to have a “ceramic sand feel,” although how this differs to a usual metal casing is unclear. The display is made from 2.5D curved glass that extends from bezel to bezel and cleanly meets the frame of the phone.

A wealth of connectivity options are available, including Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, dual SIM card slots and support for 4G LTE across a large variety of channels, including U.S. networks. The phone uses a USB Type-C port for power and data, preparing it for a future without microUSB.
The Note 8 comes with 4GB of RAM and up to 128GB of storage. There’s a 13MP main camera and an 8MP selfie shooter. Huawei claims the 4,500mAh battery is sufficient for over 1.5 days of typical usage. Alternatively, the phone can play video continuously for up to three days.
The phablet is a capable device, offering everything a typical consumer looks for in a phone. With good performance, a large battery, abundant storage and an elegant design, Huawei has a competent handset to offer. It is going up against some major rivals though, notably Xiaomi’s similar Mi Max and the Lenovo Phab 2.

The Honor Note 8 continues Honor’s reputation for high-end phones on a budget. The brand has successfully entered the U.S. by combining capable specifications with a low price tag, outperforming better known rivals at each price point and setting new standards for mid-range devices.
Pricing for the Honor Note 8 starts at 2,299 Yuan (around $350) for the 4GB RAM and 32GB storage base model. The flagship variant with 128GB of storage costs 2,799 Yuan, around $420. Huawei has confirmed the phone will be coming to the U.S. in the future but is yet to reveal exact international pricing.
Pre-orders for the device open today in China. The launch of the flagship device is being accompanied by a smaller 5-inch phone called the Honor 5. It is powered by a MediaTek processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, a lower-end alternative to the Honor 8. It is also available to pre-order today.
