Hospital Releases Injury Details For Skier Irwin

CALGARY – Former Crazy Canuck skier Dave Irwin is on life support and his ultimate recovery remains uncertain, his doctor said Monday.

“All of his brain is contused or bruised,” Dr. Ann Kirby told a news conference at Calgary’s Foothills hospital, where Irwin is being treated.

“It’s really difficult for us to predict accurately how he’s going to do for the long term.”

Irwin, 46, was injured Friday during a training run for a race at Sunshine Village ski resort near Banff.

He has been in a coma ever since.

Family friend and spokesman Steve Podborski, a one-time teammate of Irwin on Canada’s national ski team, said Irwin was improving.

“He’s getting better, showing some encouraging progress.”

But he warned that any recovery was going to take a long time.

“We don’t expect a quick recovery. It’ll take a long time.”
