Google wants to help you find jobs without leaving search

Google for Jobs was detailed in a blog post this week that explains how the feature works. When you use Google to search for a query like “jobs near me” or “retail jobs,” you’ll see a new “Jobs” information box at the top of the page. This lets you browse available job openings and filter by different types of role.
Tapping on a job will open its details and give you a link to the website where it’s listed. Job cards include a description of the position and important details like its distance from your house and whether it is part-time. Filters you can use include the role that you’ll be occupying, location, listing age and position type.
Additional information on display includes reviews and ratings of the employer, the hours you’ll be working and the transport options available to the location. Google has essentially scraped existing job-finding sites to build its own utility within search. It’s the latest of the company’s attempts to remove the need to leave search, preventing you from opening a website at all.
Google will also let you subscribe to notifications for new job listings that satisfy your search. You’ll be alerted whenever a new opening is posted, letting you review it and apply before other jobseekers who may be interested. Notifications are sent by email to keep you up-to-date on any developments wherever you are.
Google said it intends the feature to help make job searching easier for every kind of user. After hearing from job hunters and employers looking for new talent, the company has decided to build its own way of connecting the two. It said the “convenience and power” of its existing Search technology will help people find and fill new opportunities.
“People from all walks of life, experiences and backgrounds have undergone a job hunt at some point in their lives,” said Google. “Whether you’re a young adult looking for your first job, a veteran hoping to leverage your leadership experience in civilian life, or a parent looking for a job with better pay to support a growing family, we hope this new experience on Google will help make the job search simpler and more effective.”
Google has partnered with existing job listing sites including LinkedIn, Monster, WayUp, DirectEmployers, CareerBuilder, Glassdoor and Facebook to ensure search shows openings from all the most prominent sources. The platform isn’t confined to these providers and Google expects more to become available over time. The company has provided open documentation that other firms can use to push their job listings to its search results.
Google’s job-seeking search experience is available now to users in the U.S. There’s no word yet on when or if it will roll out worldwide. It’s worth noting that Google won’t handle the actual job application process, instead handing you off to the original site when you express an interest. It’s purely a tool to find open roles, letting you record them and apply later on.
