This year, for the first time, the Cloud Appreciation Society is launching Cloud Appreciation Day on Friday, September 16th.

This will be an internationally recognized day when people around the world are encouraged to spend a few moments appreciating the beauty of the sky.

This journalist learned years ago to appreciate the beauty of nature and all its wonders. Think back to your childhood – Do you remember lying on the grass, looking up to the fluffy clouds on a bright summer’s day, amazed at their movement across the sky?

That is one of my fondest childhood memories. The people with NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory also appreciate the beauty of clouds.

The scientists and technicians that fly into tropical storms and hurricanes wanted to share some of the best photographs of clouds from their missions into Hurricane Earl earlier this month.

Let’s look at a few cloud formations from around the world. This first one is from Turkey and shows Sky clouds in the atmosphere.

And what is a big storm without “thunderheads?” This next image is pretty impressive.

Be sure to take a few minutes and venture outside today. Bottom line: Cloud Appreciation Day is today, September 16, 2022. Enjoy this gallery of beautiful clouds and share your own with the Cloud Appreciation Society.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend Karen Graham, who served as Editor-at-Large at Digital Journal. She was 78 years old. Karen's view of what is happening in our world was colored by her love of history and how the past influences events taking place today. Her belief in humankind's part in the care of the planet and our environment has led her to focus on the need for action in dealing with climate change. It was said by Geoffrey C. Ward, "Journalism is merely history's first draft." Everyone who writes about what is happening today is indeed, writing a small part of our history.
