WASHINGTON (voa) – Congressional investigators have sued Vice President Dick Cheney as part of an investigation that could reveal details of the administration’s ties to the failed energy corporation Enron.
The General Accounting Office, the investigative arm of Congress, is trying to gain access to records of meetings between the vice president and executives from Enron and other energy companies. At the time, Mr. Cheney headed a task force formulating the administration’s energy policy.
A White House spokesman said the administration will fight the lawsuit as a matter of principle, arguing that the investigation would jeopardize the executive branch’s ability to solicit confidential advice.
Officials earlier said that the administration has already provided congressional investigators all the information they are entitled to receive.
Enron made campaign contributions to President Bush, and other leading politicians of both major political parties.
Congress is also investigating whether illegal accounting practices led to Enron’s collapse, the largest bankruptcy in U.S. history. A number of Enron employees saw their life savings evaporate as company stock plunged, and thousands of others lost their jobs.
