Game Review: Far Cry

Pick of the Month: Far Cry
Game Type:Action
Platform: PC
Developer: Crytek
Publisher UbiSoft
Rating: M for Mature

TORONTO, Digital Journal — Like many shooters, you start Far Cry indoors. Then, after gathering up a few items and your first gun, you go outside.

It’s about this point you’ll need to pick your jaw off the floor.

The game claims to have a 1.2 virtual mile draw distance. I believe it, so will you. You will be blown away at how alive the tropic island of the games feel, with thick foliage to can hide in, a shore that displays small islands in the distance and sunlight that streams down through the trees.

While you might be tempted to hit the beach for a tan, you’ll have to outwit homicidal mercenaries and mutant beasties instead. Your enemies are very smart, using cover and group tactics to find you. A macho head-on approach will work, but the stealthy will get a thrill from creeping around in the bushes.

The game is pretty good, but I should take a moment to sting Far Cry for not including a Quick Save feature (Auto-saves only), and go on to say it’s like somebody filled a shopping cart with parts of all the best shooters when making the game; Halo‘s weapon system and vehicles, Half-life‘s nasty critters and Doom‘s pure madness. To top it all off, they baked all these ingredients in a killer new game engine that I hope gets licensed to everyone. There is so much potential here, especially for Ghost Recon-style games.

You’ll need a powerful machine (2 GB, P4 recommended), but if you’ve got it, feed it Far Cry. Now.
