Game Review: Custom Robo

Pick of the Month: Custom Robo
Console:GameCube
Game Type:Action
Developer: Noise
Publisher: Nintendo
Rating: T for Teen

TORONTO, Digital Journal — One of the cornerstones of my diet when growing up was Japanese cartoons featuring robots beating the hell out of each other. Custom Robo not only gives you the pleasure of arenas where up to four players can smack around each others’ robots, but also the ability to customize your own. You can give yourself different bodies, and put different weapons on your arms, such as lasers and bombs. Then, it’s a fight to the finish.

The game features a story mode that is a little strange, but nonetheless, the game should played for laughs. You play a fledgling bounty hunter trying to earn a living and a reputation as a Robo Commander. You’ll trap various criminals and nogoodniks by challenging them to a Robo duel inside virtual arenas. Hey, it’s more civilized and safe than a big bloody shoot-out.

Custom Robo shines when you and some pals are madly mashing buttons, almost like Super Smash Bros. For that pleasure, and a whole lot of customization, it earns Digital Journal’s pick of the month.
