From genomics to the blockchain: Dr. Anmol Kapoor’s vision for DNA ownership in the age of bio-surveillance

After transforming cardiovascular care, longevity diagnostics, and AI-driven health insights, Dr. Anmol Kapoor is now setting his sights on something even more fundamental: the right to own your own DNA.

Opinions expressed by Digital Journal contributors are their own.

When Dr. Anmol Kapoor began his career as a cardiologist, he never imagined that his future would involve blockchain protocols, decentralized identity tokens, and DNA-based NFTs. But the deeper he dove into genomics, AI-driven health prediction, and multi-omics diagnostics, the more one critical issue surfaced: “Health data is more valuable than gold—and patients have no idea they don’t own it,” he says.

This realization, borne out of building cutting-edge health platforms like PanOmiQ, MultiOmics Lab, CardiAI, and Biongevity, has led Dr. Kapoor into an entirely new frontier: the intersection of genomic privacy, decentralized data storage, and digital patient sovereignty.

The trigger: Cracks in the genomic revolution

As Kapoor’s ecosystem grew across Canada, Europe, and the Middle East, his labs generated massive volumes of genomic data – from whole genome sequencing (WGS) to methylation and microbiome insights. While this data was powering personalized therapies and predictive diagnostics, Kapoor noticed an unsettling trend.

“We were empowering patients with knowledge about their future risks, but in the background, tech giants were quietly capturing, storing, and potentially profiting from that same DNA,” he says.

This concern wasn’t abstract. The 23andMe data breach, where hackers gained access to millions of genetic profiles, became a wake-up call to the entire medical and biotech world. Americans suddenly realized that their most intimate data wasn’t just vulnerable, it was no longer theirs.

The pivot: A DNA wallet that lives on the blockchain

In response, Kapoor launched a new initiative that could redefine digital health ownership: the world’s first DNA NFT-powered Digital Wallet.

This blockchain-based platform gives users the ability to:

  • Store their full genomic data (WGS), epigenetic records, lab results, and health scans in encrypted, decentralized vaults.
  • Own this data as a unique NFT—a tokenized, immutable proof of genomic identity and consent.
  • Control access by granting or revoking permissions to doctors, researchers, insurers, or AI tools—with full transparency and traceability.

“It’s not about selling your DNA,” Kapoor clarifies. “It’s about owning your biological identity, deciding who can use it, and potentially even earning from it if you choose to participate in research or data exchanges.”

How it works: Vautra and the anryton layer 1 blockchain

At the heart of the platform is Vautra, a decentralized storage and health identity company built on Anryton, a Layer 1 blockchain designed specifically for biomedical-grade data environments.

Vautra doesn’t just store raw data; it creates personal DNA NFTs, cryptographically signed, dynamic tokens that evolve as your health changes. Users can connect wearable devices, sequencing platforms, and diagnostics from Kapoor’s companies (PanOmiQ, BioELR, Biongevity) to continuously update their health wallet.

Researchers, pharma companies, or public health agencies can request access to anonymized datasets—but only with the explicit, on-chain consent of users.

From prediction to protection: The new mandate

For Kapoor, this move isn’t just about tech, it’s about ethics. “The more we empower patients with predictive health tools, the more we risk exposing them to surveillance capitalism,” he says. “True innovation means giving people freedom, not just insights.”

Already, pilot programs are launching in UAE, Canada, and the UK, where patients undergoing advanced testing through CardiAI or PanOmiQ can mint their DNA wallet at the end of their clinical experience. Kapoor’s long-term vision is to offer this to millions of users, especially in countries with weak health data protections.

The future: Bio-citizenship in a tokenized world

Kapoor sees a future where DNA NFTs could:

  • Act as digital passports for personalized medicine
  • Enable cross-border care continuity without compromising privacy
  • Power decentralized clinical trials, where patients are paid for sharing data under smart contracts
  • Allow families to securely store multi-generational genetic risk data—locked but accessible when needed

A cardiologist who coded a new right

In many ways, this is the natural evolution of Kapoor’s work. After building technologies that decode disease before it begins, he’s now building systems that defend the code itself.

He began his journey treating hearts. Now, he’s fighting to protect what makes us human, our genetic soul, our biological narrative, and our right to say: this is mine.
