Free Music on MP3.com Makes Money for Labels and Artists

SAN DIEGO – MP3.com, Inc. the Internet’s premier Music Service Provider (MSP), today announced that its Payback for Playback program has been extended for August. Through Payback
for Playback, the company made available $1 million per month to content
owners in the months of May, June and July.

“Consumers are clamoring for free music on the Internet, and we’ve got an
entire catalog,” said Michael Robertson, chairman and chief executive officer
of MP3.com (www.mp3.com). “MP3.com has always been about delivering free
music to fans in a manner that also benefits the company, content owners and
digital artists. Because Payback for Playback distributes payments based on
the popularity of music, we believe that we are giving content owners the
opportunity to earn money in the digital music space while continuing to
provide consumers with free music.”

One of the digital artists benefiting from the Payback for Playback
program is L.A. Carpool (www.mp3.com/lacarpool), a band in the Latin genre.
L.A. Carpool has seen its popularity rise greatly as a member of the MP3.com
community, generating thousands of dollars in Payback for Playback revenue.

“Since discovering and joining MP3.com, L.A. Carpool has had recognition
beyond our wildest expectations,” said band member Jack Gold. “We’ve even had
people see some of us in our T-shirts and say ‘L.A. Carpool? We love your
music!’ Our loyalty is with MP3.com and the opportunities it has given us to
become known throughout the world.”

All eligible content owners who post music and audio files on MP3.com have
the opportunity to participate in the Payback for Playback promotion.
Musicians interested in joining MP3.com’s community of artists can register to
post music on MP3.com at www.mp3.com/newartist.
