Four Killed in Shooting Rampage in Jamaica

KINGSTON – Jamaican police say four people were killed Friday in an early morning shooting rampage in the eastern part of the capital, Kingston.

Police say men armed with high-powered weapons entered a woman’s home in the Mountain View area and shot her 21 times. The men also shot and killed a 16-year-old boy outside the home.

Authorities say the armed men then went to a nearby home where they gunned down two people. Police gave no motive for the shootings.

The Mountain View area is a stronghold of the opposition Jamaica Labor Party, or JLP. The party has accused the governing People’s National Party, or PNP, of inciting disturbances for political purposes. The PNP denies the charge.

Kingston was the scene of violent uprisings in July. More than 30 people were killed in clashes between police and rival gangs that control communities with competing political loyalties.

Jamaica is expected to hold general elections by December of next year.
