LONDON (voa) – Britain’s Queen Elizabeth has conferred an honorary knighthood on former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani for his leadership following the September 11 terrorist attacks.
In ceremonies at Buckingham Palace the queen conferred the title Commander of the Order of British Empire on the former mayor as well as on New York’s former fire and police commissioners, Thomas Von Essen and Bernard Kerik.
Tuesday, Mayor Giuliani told British media the late British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was a source of strength for him. He said Mr. Churchill never faltered while Nazi bombs pounded London repeatedly during World War II.
The New York mayor did not kneel before the queen during the ceremony because he is not a British citizen. This will also prevent him from using the title of ‘Sir,’ but it allows him use the letters CEB after his name.
