Forging a Friendly Future: Digital Coverage, Coast to Coast

Digital Journal — Dissect a company’s marketing motto and you’re bound to learn more about its mission than any corporate literature could provide. Telus Mobility plugs the phrase “The future is friendly,” an apt promotion for a telecom powerhouse dedicated to improving its product base.

With two innovative wireless networks, PCS and Mike, this Burnaby, B.C.-based company has made its mobility unit a sparkplug for the corporation: Telus earned $101 million in the first quarter of 2004, up from $89 million a year earlier.

With 3.4 million clients across Canada, Telus Mobility has staked its place in the telecom world as an integral player beside Rogers Wireless, Bell Mobility and Microcell.

As ubiquitous as cell phones have become, Telus has managed to wear a few different hats to better service its customers. A look at its offerings demonstrates the company’s novel expansions.

The PCS service is the company’s mass-market digital wireless phone, supporting colour screens, Java software and speakerphones. The unique all-in-one upgrade is called Mike, and it integrates a PCS phone, two-way radio, text messaging and data/Internet services. Business clients especially enjoy the Global Position Satellite (GPS) ability to track the new Mike headset and report its location on the phone’s screen or on a remote laptop.

Another way Telus plans to forge a friendly future is through its Fastap dialpad, a prototype released this spring. At the CTIA Wireless 2004 conference, Telus teamed up with LG Electronics and Digit Wireless to release the first standard-sized mobile phone with a full-function keyboard. Using a tiny keyboard laid out between the numbers, Fastap responds to the text messaging trend by blending originality and ease of use. Using this innovative keypad design, the Fastap Dialpad makes text messaging a breeze compared to traditional handsets.
