NEW YORK (voa) – Final figures from last year’s mayoral race in New York City indicate the winner, billionaire Republican Michael Bloomberg spent about $73 million during the campaign.
The New York Post reports that’s more than the income of some poor countries.
On a per capita basis, it works out to almost $100 for each of the 744,000 votes that enabled him to defeat Democratic candidate Mark Green.
The $73 million sum is a record for a non-presidential election in the United States.
Mr. Bloomberg says that if he can make a difference in New York City, it will be worth every penny.
The businessman turned politician built his fortune through the financial data company that bears his Bloomberg name.
Bloomberg replaced Rudolph Giuliani who earned worldwide praise for his handling of last year’s September 11 terrorist attacks that hit the city’s financial district.
