According to TechCrunch, the social network has confirmed Evan Cheng in his new position as Director of Engineering, Blockchain.
Facebook had already set up a group within the social network to help explore blockchain technology, which was led by the head of Messenger on Facebook, David Marcus. This executive reshuffle is a substantial indication that the company is getting very serious about developing on top of blockchain technology. This news underscores the significance of the blockchain project.
As indicated in his LinkedIn profile, Evan Cheng moved up to the new position of Director of Engineering, Blockchain. Cheng was previously a computer engineer who was responsible for heading the Programming Languages and Runtimes of Facebook for three years.
Previously, Cheng spent almost a decade at Apple, where he held the position of Senior Manager of Low Level Tools. Cheng also holds experience on compilatioon technology, as well as other back-end engineering. TechCrunch also reported that Cheng is an advisor to such blockchain startups and projects as Zilliqa and ChainLink.
Aside from David Marcus and Evan Cheng, it was also reported that Kevin Weil (formerly an Instagram Vice President) has taken on the position as Facebook’s Vice President of Product, Blockchain.
