Carlyle Hotel Sold For $130 Million

NEW YORK – After being on the market for almost two years, the ultra-posh Carlyle Hotel on the Upper East Side was sold to an investment group that owns 17 other luxury hotels for $130 million, The New York Times reported.

The Group, Maritz, Wolff & Company, which owns 17 other luxury hotels has signed a contract to purchase the 71-year-old Carlyle and will make the Upper East Side landmark its flagship hotel, the group’s president Philip F. Maritz said in Thursday’s New York Times.

The Carlyle will not undergo any major makeovers and will keep its name, Maritz said. It will be managed by Rosewood, a company based out of Dallas that runs ultra-luxury hotels around the world. Rooms at the Carlyle rent for $495 to $3,000 a night.

The Carlyle was put on the market in March 1999, by its then managing partner, Jerome L. Greene. Greene had bought the hotel in 1967 for $15.5 million.

The hotel has served as a haven for international travelers for decades. It served as John F. Kennedy’s New York White House, and was the residence of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, whenever she was in New York.
