As climate change-induced crises continue to proliferate across Canada and around the world, leaders and experts alike have called for deeper investment into solutions capable of combating their cause. There are a number of promising technologies out there, so far, realizing their full potential has simply come down to a matter of funding the right projects.

With this in mind, national cleantech accelerator Foresight Canada has continued its annual ‘Foresight 50’ campaign, seeking to identify and fund 50 of the country’s most promising climate solutions. The initiative is funded by a consortium of Canadian companies, entrepreneurs, and investors, and offers thousands of dollars in grants to be shared among the 50 projects, as well as access to additional resources and support.

The program is designed to recognize the most cutting-edge technologies, from renewable energy and green transportation solutions to sustainable building materials, food production systems, and more. It was created in response to a prevalent challenge among innovators, identified in a 2021 national survey conducted by Foresight: that of raising capital.

Through the Foresight 50, Canada’s best and brightest innovators have the opportunity to realize their visions and help build a more sustainable future. They’re connected directly with companies, investors, customers, and partners capable of taking their project to the next level, all while enjoying the support and resources of the Foresight accelerator.

The hope is that, by providing access to capital and furthering innovative technologies, Foresight will be able to help bridge the gap between research and application, making made-in-Canada solutions a reality.

According to CEO of Foresight Canada Jeanette Jackson, this year’s campaign is an ambitious but necessary step in the right direction “Foresight’s audacious goal is to see Canada become the first G7 country to reach net zero. To do this, we need to aggressively commercialize and scale Canadian solutions through progressive support and access to capital.” she says.

“It is truly inspiring to see the innovative cleantech solutions the 2022 Foresight 50 list represent to push us towards this ambitious target. By fostering relationships with investors and key stakeholders, these Canadian innovators can gain the traction they need to impact the green transition on a global scale”.

Last year’s edition of Foresight 50 saw the winning companies collectively raise over $593M in venture funding and equity investments, providing a strong indication of the potential impact this initiative can have in terms of creating sustainable solutions. There’s a massive precedent set for this year’s honourees, who were just chosen from a competitive national pool of 150-plus applicants. Independent judges made their selections based on criteria that considers everything from a project’s potential for environmental impact and overall value as an investment to probability of success.

The official winners were announced on December 1st, and are as follows:

This year’s Foresight 50 definitely have massive potential to make a real difference in the fight against climate change and open up a brighter future for our planet. With the right resources and support, these start-ups can become the visionaries of a cleaner Canada – transitioning to a more sustainable world.
