Canada Has Offered Assistance That Is Needed To Help In The Rescue Effort

OTTAWA (September 11, 2001) – Canada joins all civilized nations in expressing horror and revulsion at the cowardly acts of terror that have been perpetrated against the United States today.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims.

As the Prime Minister said, terrorist acts are an offence against the freedoms and rights of all civilized nations.

On behalf of Canada, the Prime Minister has offered any assistance that is needed to help in the rescue effort, for medical treatment, and in the investigation of this horrific crime.

Air traffic that has been diverted from the United States as a result of the attack is landing at smaller airports in Eastern Canada. We will ensure that the diverted travellers – numbering in the thousands – will be kept as comfortable as possible.

All department and agencies responsible for the security and safety of Canadians – the RCMP, the Canadian Security and Intelligence Service, the Department of National Defence, Immigration Canada, Canada Customs and Revenue Agency and Transport Canada – have heightened their vigilance.

Until further notice, all air movements from Canadian airports are grounded, except for the flights have been diverted from the United States.

Our border is open, but Customs Officers are on heightened state of alert and will be checking all passengers as they cross the border. This could result in delays for travellers.

We will continue to monitor the situation and take whatever action is necessary.

If you or any of your constituents need any information about relatives or friends who may have been in the U.S. today, you may call the emergency hotline of the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs at 1-800-387-3124.
