VICTORIA, British Columbia — An alleged international swindler wanted in the United States, France and Switzerland has been arrested in Canada, police said Friday.
Det. Sgt. Ron Coulls of police in Oak Bay, a district of Victoria, said the man was arrested in a hotel on Thursday night. The suspect’s name was not immediately released, but a local television station reported he used several aliases, including Christopher Rockefeller.
“There’s a lot of things yet to be learned about him,” Coulls said. “He obviously had several identities and the investigation that’s ongoing will reveal all that I’m sure.”
In a news release Friday, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said the investigation began with fraud allegations in Vancouver and Whistler in British Columbia.
The suspect, who was born in France, was wanted by the U.S. Marshal’s office in Virginia, the FBI in Los Angeles and in New York, according to the RCMP release. It said he also was sought in France and Switzerland. The release did not specify the charges.
He was detained on suspicion of violating immigration rules. No further details were immediately available, police said.
