WASHINGTON (voa) – President Bush says the state of the union has never been stronger despite war, economic recession and the unprecedented danger of terrorism that threatens the civilized world.
In his State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress, Mr. Bush said the United States has accomplished much since the September 11th terrorist attacks.
But he said the war against terrorism has only just started. Mr. Bush said thousands of terrorists are spread across the globe like ticking time bombs.
Mr. Bush said the United States will continue striving to shut down terrorist cells wherever they exist. He singled out North Korea, Iran, and Iraq and their terrorist allies as a threat to the peace of the world. The president said that by seeking weapons of mass destruction, the three nations pose a grave and growing danger.
The president also discussed his next budget that he said will include the largest increase in defense spending in two decades.
Mr. Bush said another budget priority is to provide economic security for Americans by improving education, securing reliable sources of energy and working to create new jobs. But Mr. Bush said the budget will have to run a deficit in order to achieve his goals.
Mr. Bush ended his address saying that that the world now faces a clear choice between tyranny and freedom.
