NEW JERSEY – State leaders say President Bush’s visit to New Jersey is an attempt to put the heat on US Senator Robert Torricelli, whose swing vote could be important to Bush’s proposed tax cut.
The Democrat could be an important swing vote on Bush’s proposed tax cut on the 20-member Senate Finance Committee.
President Bush will visit a faith-based mentoring program for youths in Plainfield. The president also will address the state Chamber of Commerce at the East Brunswick Hilton.
Torricelli flew with Bush aboard Air Force One. Unlike many of his Democratic colleagues, Torricelli has endorsed the size of the tax cut. But Torricelli wants to give larger breaks to those earning between 60- and 100-thousand dollars.
Freshman Senator Jon Corzine has repeatedly expressed opposition to the Bush tax cut.
Democrats say that $483 billion tax cut package proposed by president George W. Bush is based on Deja Voo Doo economics. “Bush uses up the surplus for a huge tax cut missing a golden opportunity to reduce the debt, strengthen Medicare or Social Security or invest in education,” – said Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich.
