At a recent summit on artificial intelligence and robotics in China’s southern city of Shenzhen, Maximilian Doemling, senior manager for highly automated driving at BMW Group, said BMW, Intel and Mobileye had a big announcement on their driverless car project.
“If you’re expecting autonomous function where you can be on the highway, pressing the button and the car is doing everything for you, like lane changing and driving and that stuff, and you can play with smartphone, and you’re always safe, I mean we had the big announcement with Intel and Mobileye that we will have the i-Next in 2021,” Doemling said.
The i-Next model of self-driving automobiles will be BMW’s centerpiece as it pushes its dominance in the luxury car market further.

“Our new innovation driver, with autonomous driving, digital connectivity, intelligent lightweight design, a totally new interior and ultimately bringing the next generation of electro-mobility to the road,” said Harald Krüger, chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG.
Last month, BMW announced its partnership with Intel and Mobileye as it is joining other car makers such as Tesla and Mercedes Benz in the race to develop self-driving vehicles.
“BMW Group, Intel and Mobileye are joining forces to make self-driving vehicles and future mobility concepts become a reality,” the three firms said in a statement.
“The three leaders from the automotive, technology and computer vision and machine learning industries are collaborating to bring solutions for highly and fully automated driving into series production by 2021.”

American firm Intel is one of the largest makers of semiconductor chip while Israel’s Mobileye is a global leader in the making of vision-based advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) that give warnings to avoid collision.
Since 2014, BMW has been conducting research on driverless car, signing a contract with Chinese web services company Baidu in its effort to come up with the autonomous vehicle technology.
As more consumers worldwide slowly embrace electric and self-driving automobiles, some multinational companies are cashing in on the growing electric and autonomous vehicle market.
Google has created a separate company for driverless car development while Apple may tap Austrian automotive contract manufacturer Magna for its reported plan to build electric vehicle.
