BlackBerry Bold Launches in Canada Aug. 21

Research in Motion announced it would launch its latest and fastest smartphone, the BlackBerry Bold, on Thursday Aug. 21 in Canada. The Bold is RIM’s first smartphone since May 2007 and it is being heralded as a strong iPhone competitor.

Digital Journal — Research in Motion and Rogers Wireless will finally unveil the BlackBerry Bold to the public in a media-only event on Aug. 21, DigitalJournal.com has learned. The long-awaited Bold is touted as the fastest BlackBerry to date: it runs on the 3G network, which recently gained notoriety when Apple released the iPhone 3G.

The BlackBerry Bold hits Canadian store shelves weeks after it has been released in international markets such as Austria, Germany and Britain. The Bold is expected to reach the U.S. in September through AT&T.

While no Canadian pricing has officially been announced, a popular BlackBerry fansite reported the Bold will supposedly be sold for $399 through Rogers Wireless. By comparison, the 16GB iPhone costs $299.

It’s the first new BlackBerry from RIM since it released the Curve in May 2007.

The Bold comes loaded with GPS capability, music playback, a two-megapixel camera, and 1GB of storage memory. It also appeals to business users who want to edit Microsoft Word, Excel or PowerPoint files on the go.
