OTTAWA — Canadian Alliance Leader Stockwell Day couldn’t keep a lid on dissent over his leadership Wednesday after presenting a plan to unite his caucus, with one MP again calling for his resignation.
Despite Day’s claim that he had unanimous support for his action plan, Art Hanger emerged from a private meeting with the leader to say that he and his constituents still don’t have confidence in him.
Day outlined his vision for improving party fortunes in the morning. That wasn’t good enough for Hanger, who last week lost his job as defense critic when he questioned Day’s competency.
“My concerns remain as they have been,” said Hanger, adding he had no intention of resigning from the 66-member caucus.
“I think for the good of the party, that Mr. Day should step down.”
Hanger was the only MP to openly challenge Day’s leadership. Several others offered only conditional support for his plan, stopping short of endorsing his leadership.
