Apple unveils the ‘ultimate upgrade’, a 9.7-inch iPad Pro

Apple March 2016 Live Event – Apple introduced its previously-rumoured 9.7-inch iPad Pro today, adding a smaller form-factor to its professional-oriented computer. It said it has launched a smaller iPad Pro because it has sold over 200 million 9.7-inch iPads.
The size remains the most popular iPad form factor to date, traditionally led by the iPad Air. The Air brand has now been dropped in favour of the “Pro” moniker as Apple restructures how it markets its tablets. It aims to attract people seeking mobile productivity as well as entertainment.

“iPad Pro is a new generation of iPad that is indispensable and immersive, enabling people to be more productive and more creative. It’s incredibly fast, extremely portable, and completely natural to use with your fingers, Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard. And now it comes in two sizes,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing.
“The 9.7-inch iPad Pro has a new Retina display with True Tone technology, four-speaker audio system, blazing fast A9X chip, 12-megapixel iSight camera, 5-megapixel FaceTime HD camera, faster wireless, and support for Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard. It is the ultimate upgrade for existing iPad users and replacement for PC users.”
The 9.7-inch iPad Pro has the same display as that used on the 12.9-inch edition. It is 40 percent less reflective than the iPad Air 2, Apple’s former flagship 9.7-inch iPad. It is also 25 percent brighter, making it the brightest and least reflective tablet on sale and an ideal device for outdoor use.
The display features a new innovation that Apple is calling “True Tone.” It uses two four-channel ambient light sensors that match the colour temperature of the display to the ambient light conditions, making text on the screen easier to read in every lighting situation. White shades always match paper white, regardless of the ambient environment.

The quad-speaker audio system of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro returns for the 9.7-inch version. The newcomer also includes Apple’s flagship A9X processor, featuring 12 graphics cores for heavy gaming, video editing and 3D rendering. Apple said over 1 million iPad apps are now available, letting owners complete thousands of different computing tasks from a single device.
The 9.7-inch iPad Pro supports the same “Pro” accessories as its larger sibling. The Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil are both available, adding a portable keyboard and drawing stylus to the tablet’s arsenal of business-friendly tools.
The new iPad Pro will be available in silver, gold, space grey and rose gold. It will start at $599 for the Wi-Fi only 32GB model, rising to $749 for the 128GB edition and $899 for the flagship 256GB model. Pre-orders open on March 24 and will begin shipping on March 31.
