Apple to unveil new iPad Pro range this spring

Apple unveiled new hardware in March 2016 and is now being tipped to do so again this year. According to a report originating from Japanese news site Mac Otakara, covered by MacRumors, the company is prepping multiple devices for a spring launch. As with last year, the aim is to better distinguish each of its products, without them overshadowing each other during its traditional September iPhone announcement.
The iPad Pro 2 will be offered in four different sizes, including 7.9-inch, 9.7-inch, 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch models. The 7.9-inch version will be the replacement for the iPad Mini 4, taking the compact tablet up a market level by moving it to the “Pro” brand. It’ll feature a 12-megapixel rear camera, True Tone display and Smart Connector accessory port.

The 10.5-inch model will have the same physical size as the 9.7-inch Pro available today. Apple will use a bezel-less edge-to-edge display to cover the front with glass, allowing the tablet’s footprint to be reduced. There will be no physical home button but the front-facing camera inset in the top bezel will be retained.
Apple will also improve the capabilities of the range-topping 12.9-inch iPad Pro. This will feature the True Tone display currently found on the 9.7-inch model. The advanced display technology uses a system of ambient light sensors to automatically match the screen’s intensity and colour temperature to its surrounding environment, making text easier on the eyes.
Apple hasn’t significantly expanded its iPad Pro range since launching the device back in September 2015. The company routinely pitches the tablet as an ideal PC replacement for professionals. Designed to rival the Microsoft Surface and Google’s Pixel C, the device features Apple’s 3D Touch pressure-sensing display and Pencil stylus.

In March 2016, Apple launched the current 9.7-inch Pro, dropping the iPad Air name in the process. Both models are now beginning to show their age though. A range overhaul including second-generation hardware is due. With the timing reported by Mac Otakara aligning with Apple’s spring hardware event last year, it seems likely that new iPads are just a month away.
As well as new tablets, Apple is also expected to upgrade its entry-level iPhone SE with a new 128GB storage option. There will not be a new major version of the SE, despite it proving popular with customers. It’s thought Apple may also introduce a new red colour option for the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, giving buyers an alternative to the current metallic shades.
