Apple Shuffles Prices and Launches New iPod nano

Digital Journal — Surprise, surprise, Apple has released another iPod. Again.

Introducing a smaller version of its popular iPod nano, the company’s new 1GB model holds as many as 240 songs and sells for as low as $149 (all prices in US dollars). The 2- and 4-gigabyte models introduced last September are still available.

Apple also cut the cost of its iPod Shuffle to $69 for the 512-megabyte model and $129 for the 1-gigabyte version — both $30 cheaper than before. Apple said it had changed pricing of some of its low-end iPods to make the popular music players more affordable. The move will undoubtedly work to make the company even more popular in the industry.

Sales of iPods tripled last quarter, says CEO Steve Jobs, with 14 million units being sold before the holidays. Since 2001, Apple has sold about 42 million iPods.

The iPod nano is the slimmest iPod (it’s pencil-thin at just 6.9 mm), and the new version features a colour screen.

The previous nano came under fierce criticism after many users complained the screen could easily be scratched and cracked, making the unit unusable. Apple apologized for the problems, but one American consumer has since launched a class-action lawsuit against the company.
