The gadget, launched April 3 in the U.S., has been met with mixed reviews. Some believe it’s the saviour of the book (and maybe newspaper) industry, while others say they won’t shell out for an “oversized iPod.”
Numbers talk, however, and in this case Apple has seen strong sales in less than a month.
“One million iPads in 28 days — that’s less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO in a news release. “Demand continues to exceed supply.”
Apple recently announced a 3G version of its iPad, a version that will work with wireless carriers so iPad users can browse the Web or check email while on the road. According to some estimates, Apple sold 300,000 3G iPads in the first weekend alone.
As CNN reports, Apple analyst Gene Munster and his team reportedly called 50 Apple Stores yesterday to check up on numbers. Of those called 49 were sold out of iPad 3Gs and most had run out of Wi-Fi-only models.
According to Apple, iPad users have downloaded more than 12 million apps from the App Store, and more than 1.5 million ebooks have been purchased via the new iBookstore.
Developers have also created more than 5,000 apps specifically for the iPad.
