Apple admits the iPad Pro may ‘stop responding’ while charging

Several early iPad Pro adopters have complained that their device plays dead after being placed on charge for an extended period of time. A thread on the Apple support forums now has over 26,000 views and in excess of 350 replies. It is joined by similar discussions on Reddit and other message boards.
The general gist of the reports is that the iPad Pro is plugged into charge with the intention of leaving it connected until the battery reaches capacity. When the owner returns to the device later on, they find it completely unresponsive to any form of input and the screen remains black. The only way to restore the device is to force restart or reset it.
With such a major issue affecting its newest device, Apple couldn’t ignore the concerns for long. It has now acknowledged that the $800+ tablet may “stop responding” to button presses or screen taps and has provided a temporary fix for when the screen goes black. The company advises users to keep using the only remedy found thus far — force restarting the iPad by holding the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds.
The company hasn’t given any details on what the bug is caused by. Speculation is currently centring on an issue in iOS, possibly related to automatic device backup to iCloud. The feature runs automatically while charging when on the default settings and “several” people have reportedly ended the appearance of black screens by disabling it or enabling airplane mode during charging.
Apple says its “aware of this issue” and is now investigating it further. It promises to post more information once it knows what is happening. Assuming it is a software issue, a fix should be issued to all iPad Pro owners eventually via an iOS update, although many have complained they weren’t expecting this from a ‘professional’ tablet billed as something that could replace a PC.
