SEATTLE — Amazon.com will begin selling software that buyers can download directly onto their computers within a few minutes of purchase.
The Internet retailing giant’s latest venture, called the Software Downloads Store, is focusing its marketing push on such popular tax programs as Quicken and Turbo Tax.
The Web site also will feature computer security programs such as Norton AntiVirus 2001, among other offerings.
Amazon spokesman Justin Osmer said that, for now at least, the dowloadable software will cost about the same as the packaged item, except that people will save on shipping costs.
”The publishers realize that there is a premium on immediate delivery,” Osmer said.
