Toronto city police were contacted about 2 a.m. Sunday on a report of a vehicle that had been found at the bottom of a sink hole, some 20 feet deep.
The incident occurred at a construction site near Vaughan Road and Oakwood Avenue on the west side of the city.
The driver of the black Ford Mustang convertible had reportedly left the scene of the crash by the time authorities arrived, according to reports.
The car reportedly was a rental.
Authorities believe there was also a passenger in the car at the time of the crash, but don’t have any reason to think either person sustained any serious injuries.
The vehicle was found lying on its top, abandoned at the bottom of the ditch. Construction in that area is apparently part of construction efforts by a nearby garage.
Firefighters were called in to remove the vehicle from the bottom of the sinkhole. It was later towed from the scene.
According to updated information later Sunday, authorities have since apprehended a 36-year-old man whom they aren’t yet identifying.
That suspect has been charged with careless driving, failing to remain at the scene of an accident, and failing to report a collision.
The investigation continues.
