CAMBRIDGE – In the wake of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling on Napster, Webnoize (http://www.webnoize.com), estimates that 91 million songs were downloaded using the Napster service yesterday. This compares to 130 million songs downloaded on Sunday in anticipation of the Appeal Court’s decision.
Webnoize estimates that nearly 3 billion songs were downloaded using Napster in January, 90% more than in September 2000 when Webnoize first began monitoring the system. Activity rose again this last weekend when 250 million songs were downloaded, a 49% increase over the 168 million songs downloaded during the last weekend of January.
“Any drop in activity is likely to be only temporary,” said Webnoize Analyst Matt Bailey, who led the study. “The Napster user base continues to grow, and any further legal developments will trigger a downloading frenzy even larger than seen last weekend.”
