SCOTSTOWN, Quebec — A car plunged into a water-filled quarry after a campfire party early Sunday, killing all five teen-age passengers, police said. The driver, a 21-year-old man, survived.
The passengers, three males and two females aged 15 to 18, all drowned when the car went into the water of the quarry about 120 miles east of Montreal, said Quebec provincial police spokesman Serge Dubord.
Witnesses told police the group had been drinking, and the driver underwent blood tests to determine if his blood-alcohol level. He might face criminal charges, Dubord said.
He said the driver may have turned in the wrong direction on a small trail in a field near the quarry, a popular swimming and party spot.
Relatives and friends of the victims gathered at the accident site Sunday as the bodies and car were recovered from the water.
“You just can’t understand how this could happen,” said Raymond Morin, an uncle of one of the victims.
