World Series: Giants take 2-0 lead over Tigers, Bumgarner sharp

Tonight’s second 2012 World Series game was stingy for hitters. The Giants only gave up two hits and the Tigers were also in top form defensively, only allowing four hits. But slugging didn’t give the Giants the 2-0 win in San Francisco; instead, a sac fly and a double play scored the Giants runs.

Bumgarner notched eight strikeouts in his seven solid innings. For the Tigers, starter Doug Fister lasted six scoreless innings. When Doug Smyly came on to take over the seventh, facing a bases loaded situation with no outs. Brandon Crawford ground out in a double play, scoring Pence from third.

For the Giants, the 8th also earned them a run when Pence hit a sac fly to score Angel Pagan. The Giants held the 2-0 lead to a tense 9th inning, and the deadly Giants closer Sergio Romo threw a 1-2-3 inning to end the game.

The Giants, who won the World Series in 2010, now have a 2-0 cushion in the World Series. Detroit hosts the third game on Saturday.
