The video evidence is clear: Two defensive backs from John Jay High School, playing in a game in San Antonio versus Marble Falls, ran straight into the referee from behind. One player smashed into his back, while the other hit him as he was on the ground.
The attack occurred while Marble Falls was attempting to run out the clock and preserve its 15-9 win.
“I’ve coached 14 years and I’ve never seen anything like it,” Marble Falls coach Matt Green said, according to media reports.
The incident stems from the referee deciding to eject two players from John Jay the play earlier.
Digital Journal learned school district athletic director Stan Laing called the video “very disturbing.” The district will be investigating to see what instigated the incident, Laing said.
According to reports, John Jay’s coach apologized to Marble Falls’ coach after the game.
We have seen this kind of ref targeting before, most notably in a fast-pitch softball tournament in 2013. The video below shows the called ball and ensuing run before the pitcher, catcher and coach collude to decide to let a ball hit the ump. The catcher moves out of the way when the pitch zooms in, striking the ump in the mask. He immediately ejected the coach, pitcher and catcher.
