Venus Williams Meets Sister Serena in Wimbeldon Finals

Defending champion Venus Williams will compete against her younger sister Serena in the Wimbeldon finals match on July 4. It will be the eighth time the American sisters battle each other at a majors final.

It’s almost too fitting: Venus and Serena Williams will once again square off in one of tennis’s most acclaimed courts. The Williams sister will compete in the Wimbeldon Finals on an appropriate day — July 4, the American independence day.

In the semifinals, Serena beat Elena Dementieva 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 8-6 in a match that lasted 2 hours and 49 minutes, the longest women’s semifinal in Wimbledon history. Venus made short work of No. 1 seed Dinara Safina in a blistering 6-1, 6-0 win.

The Williams are meeting on the finals court for the second straight year at Wimbeldon. The match will mark the eight time they have competed against each other in a final in a major series. Serena is seeking her 11th Grand Slam title and second this year while Venus is aiming for her sixth title at the only Grand Slam played on grass.

The final match is poised to be a nail-biter: the Williams sisters are 2-2 on these grass courts and 10-10 against each other overall.
